BULLYING IS NOT OKAY!
Today I’m calling it out – Bullying is NOT okay!
I have mentored someone through prolonged unacceptable psychological abuse, isolation, and intimidation in her workplace.
This vibrant woman, who was talented, intelligent, self-assured, stylish and inclusive, became a shadow of her former self.
The worst part is that she’s the one who employed the person who ended up being her bully.
The bully who then acquired a job title that was not earned through experience nor education, was devoid of any management or leadership skills and successfully isolated her victim from company information, emails, and celebrations of KPI’s.
She got into management’s ear and created doubt – even though the victim was with the company for many years and was the highest selling salesperson nationwide, and valued by her customers who wrote rave reviews about their experience.
Thankfully she is now in a workplace where the manager values her and all employees, creates an environment of team work, collaboration, sharing of information, motivation and celebrating success.
Then there’s the young employee in her late twenties who was bullied by her direct report and her peer. The organisation lost a talented, committed and energetic team member because someone decided to diminish and isolate her.
Managers and leaders have a responsibility to ensure psychological safety in the workplace and to implement systems and practices that are consistent and enacted. Not rules for some, and different rules for others.
An example of this is the ‘stealing’ of sales from employees who have worked on developing business opportunities with their clients. The commission being ‘swiped’ from the person who nurtured the client in the first place.
There are so many more stories I’m privy too through my consulting practice, however what stands out is that women are turning on women. This is worrying.
There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.
– Madeleine Albright
What does bullying look like?
Workplace conflict, isolation, harassment, job insecurity, fear, diminished rewards, doubt, sexual harassment, injustice, assumptions, unrealistic demands, lack of support, violence, and so much more.
The standard you walk past is the standard you accept.
– Lieutenant General David Morrison,
Chief of the Australian Army
If you’re in a position of management, leadership or influence, it is your responsibility to create a culture of workplace safety. One where people thrive, where their input matters, where they are valued, mentored and steered in the right direction when needed.
