THE HERO’S JOURNEY

Recently, I was reminded of the writings of an American philosopher named Joseph Campbell, who wrote The Hero’s Journey.

Each stage of The Hero’s Journey can be seen as a metaphor for the challenges and opportunities faced in our daily life, whether it’s a call for adventure or to return home triumphant and with a deeper understanding of oneself. What is learnt along that way makes all the difference.

What is The Hero’s Journey?

Firstly, there’s a call to adventure. It might be a challenge or an opportunity that can either be accepted or rejected. The decision will alter the life of the hero. It may be a chance to travel, a desire to pursue further studies, a new hobby, a job offer, or to make a significant life change. This is the moment that the hero steps outside of the comfort zone.

Secondly, this is threshold where the hero decides to accept the call to adventure and subsequently crosses into the unknown. It can be about overcoming a belief, starting a business, changing jobs, or taking that trip.

Thirdly, the hero will meet a mentor who will provide guidance and support. It might be a teacher, coach, book, friend or family member, or a professional mentor. This person(s) helps the hero to navigate the challenges and obstacles, providing opportunities for learning, upskilling and overcoming limiting beliefs and fears.

Fourthly, the challenges and obstacles must be overcome in order to complete the quest.  It might be overcoming fear and self-doubt, or climbing a metaphorical mountain.

The Abyss is where the hero faces their greatest challenge often risking or sacrificing something important in order to overcome it. It’s usually some sort of crisis or turning point, and may involve insecurity, unknowns, bullying, break ups, or emotional challenges.  This is where the hero meets him/herself. It’s where the hero digs deep to learn the lessons, gain new insights and perspectives, and to never give up.

The Transformation is where the hero undergoes a change as a result of their experiences. It may be about becoming stronger, more resilient, or having a new direction or sense of purpose. It will most likely include some sort of atonement and making amends.

The Return is when the hero returns home, often changed by their experiences and with knew knowledge and understanding. It may be moments of celebration, reflection, and sharing the newfound insights with those around them.  It’s about integrating the lessons into daily life, and from this place the hero comes to wisdom.

How can you use the Hero’s Journey in your own life?

  • identify your personal call to adventure
  • take on the challenge
  • seek out a mentor or support person to help you navigate the journey
  • embrace the transformation that comes from being uncomfortable
  • learn the lesson and meet yourself there
  • reflect on the experiences and share your wisdom

Remember to see the potential of growth in the journey of becoming your own hero, both through the challenging and rewarding moments, and embrace the insights and perspectives of your experiences to help you to create positive change and to become the best version of yourself.

It’s only when looking back
that we can connect the dots.
